Have you been thinking about how to add decorative handmade tiles to your kitchen backsplash or around your bathroom sink? Mudflat studio artist Katherine Hackl has experience creating ceramic murals in residential and commercial spaces. In this workshop she will talk about planning and designing a project for installation, including materials and installation for interior and exterior spaces. She will help students with any specific design concerns and troubleshoot potential problems, beginning with how to start the process to develop ideas for your particular space. Katherine will also discuss different clays to use for various applications, how to transfer your design to green or bisque tiles, how to enlarge your design to a prodiuction drawing and calculate shrinkage, and combining handmade and commercial tiles.

Students should bring a photo of the space they wish to create a mural for, with exact measurements, and also bring any drawings of ideas to work with for your project. This workshop will not include any claywork, but rather all of the design work you need to do before you execute your tile idea. A materials list will be sent to participants prior to the workshop.

Tuition: $200, members $100

**Please join us for Katherine's "Tuttle Talk" on Friday January 27th. She will be showing many examples of the residential and commercial ceramic murals she has created, and speak briefly about her processes. This talk is free and open to the public. Potluck dinner at 6 pm, presentation at 7 pm.
