Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

Stand With Mudflat

Mudflat stands with black communities and communities of color and all those fighting to end racism in overt and covert forms. We strive to create a welcoming environment in our studio and are proud of the inclusive and warm Mudflat community that exists. There is so much more that we must do to ensure we are truly living our values as an arts organization. We are committed to devoting the time, energy, and resources to examine our implicit biases, and to support racial justice and social equity. We commit ourselves to broadening our audience through continued outreach in East Somerville and Greater Boston, to developing programming alongside artists from marginalized communities, and to foster a space that is inclusive for all. We welcome your input and voice to work with us towards these goals.

Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion mission:

The Mudflat Board of Directors, Staff and Faculty are committed to ensuring that the studio is a space where people of all identities and abilities feel respected and valued. In the spring of 2020, the Mudflat Board of Directors formed a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee to assess our organizational practices, identify areas for improvement, and find ways to implement new initiatives to ensure that we are living our values. The DEI committee is committed to devoting the time, energy, and resources to examine our implicit biases, and to support racial justice and social equity.

Immediate and long term Goals from
The Mudflat Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board Committee:

  • Recognize diversity, equity and inclusion as it connects to Mudflat’s mission. Mudflat will lead with respect and tolerance.

  • Create a Code of Conduct to hold the Mudflat community accountable to these values. We expect everyone to embrace these values and to express them in studio interactions and through everyday practice.

  • Advocate for, support, and seek out learning opportunities at the board-level about how systemic inequities impact our organization’s work, and address it in a way that is consistent with our mission.

  • Acknowledge and dismantle any inequities within our By-Laws, programs, and services.

  • In selecting board and staff members, Mudflat will consider the barriers and factors that often stand in the way of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities entering and thriving in the arts community.

  • Commit time and resources to increase diversity particularly at the leadership level within our board, staff and committees.

  • Develop a system to be more intentional and conscious of bias during the hiring, promotion, or evaluation process.

  • Expand offerings for underrepresented artists.

  • By connecting with other arts organizations committed to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

  • Through scholarship opportunities

  • By offering arts education through more equitable means.

  • The DEI committee will regularly report to the Mudflat community.

2021 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Community Survey:

To build a diverse and inclusive organization, we need to understand the Mudflat experience, and that starts with understanding how people from all backgrounds feel about the current state of Mudflat’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In April of 2021 we will launch a survey to collect data about Mudflat’s current environment. Informed by the data collected from this survey, the DEI committee and the Mudflat Board will assess its cultural competency and apply the knowledge gained to our current DEI goals.
