David LaPierre and Marc Dobay

Saturday January 11, 2-5 & Saturday March 21, 2-5

Tuition:  $275.00, includes materials and firings

This workshop has already filled.

In this workshop, you will learn the basic background and history of Crystalline Glazing. Participants will produce porcelain work to be fired using glazes and firings that will highlight crystalline glazes. We will cover throwing techniques including appropriate forms and design aspects for your pots. Participants will learn about the process from throwing, trimming and glazing as well as other considerations for optimizing crystal growth.

At the initial meeting on January 11, 2-5 pm, we will review the overall process and discuss and demonstrate throwing forms and pedestals/catch basins. We will also touch on hand-building techniques and considerations – crystalline glazing need not be limited to wheel thrown forms! Participants will receive their clay and will have the opportunity to throw and receive feedback on forming.  Porcelain clay will be used for this workshop as it is the best canvas for showcasing the beautiful crystals. All work will be bisque fired at Mudflat.

The second meeting on March 21, 2-5 pm, will be a glaze workshop. Participants will attach catch basins and learn about the basics of crystalline glaze chemistry. We will demonstrate glazing by brushing and dipping. We will then glaze pots and prepare the glazed pots for transport. Pots will be fired at David’s studio in Maynard MA. We will also discuss post-firing techniques for removing the pots from their pedestals, grinding and finishing the bottoms.

A post-firing meeting time will be scheduled so all participants can see the group’s fired results.
